Michelle hails from the country’s heartland, in the middle of nowhere, IL, and graduated from the University of Iowa in Biomedical Engineering with a BS in 2011. During her time there she gained experience from several research labs in different fields, from otolaryngolgy to image processing to environmental engineering, and had the opportunity to travel to China for the IREE NSF 2010 research fellowship. She moved to Boston to pursue her MS in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, where she worked with Professor Mark Grinstaff’s group on pH-responsive, expansile nanoparticles. Her thesis focused on the incorporation of different surfactants into the nanoparticle synthesis procedure to modulate the characteristics of the drug delivery vehicle as well as the biological response. Her favorite scientific pastime is to sit in the basement of the Photonics building and take images on the scanning electron microscope. She was a fellow of both the Cross-Disciplinary Training in Nanotechnology for Cancer and the BU Urban Fellows Project. In addition, she was an active member of the Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GWISE) student group, in which she was the webmaster, leader of the GWISE Knitting Circle and an organizer of several other events. Outside of school she enjoys reading, rock climbing, knitting and baking
